PROCEDURE

If you are eligible for a U Card you may apply for one as follows:

Students

First Year Student
Upon confirmation of admittance to the University of Minnesota, bring your driver's license, state ID or passport to one of the University designated locations to have your picture taken and card issued. You may also have the opportunity to participate in the U Card Express Service, offered via the U Card's spring mailing to all newly admitted first year and transfer students.

All Other Students (except visiting)
After registering for day or evening credit, allow one day for processing. Then, bring your driver's license, state ID or passport to one of the University designated locations to have your picture taken and card issued.

All Other Eligible Individuals

Regents, Faculty, Academic Staff, Staff and Retirees

  1. Check with your payroll administrator, or call 612-626-9900, to verify you have been entered into the PeopleSoft system. If not, have your departmental payroll administrator enter your information.

  2. Bring your driver's license, state ID or passport to one of the University designated locations to have your picture taken* and card issued.

Affiliated Faculty, Affiliated Academic Staff, Affiliated Staff and Visiting Students
Have the sponsoring department use the web-based process to formalize your sponsorship (http://www.umn.edu/dirtools/sponsor). Once you receive an e-mail address and/or are listed in the online directory, you are eligible to receive a U Card. The U Card Office will grant a one-year term for U Card eligibility. At the end of each fiscal year, we will request departmental verification of your continued status.

* If you work more than 50 miles from the metro area, you can submit a current standard sized passport quality photo to your department. Your department will contact the U Card Office at (612) 626-9903 for more information on how to forward the photo along with any necessary paperwork to the U Card Office. The photo will be scanned and the card returned to your department contact for distribution.
